When it served
as prime contractor for the concrete and general trades package
of this viatal project for the University Health Center of Pittsburgh,
Mosites Construction Company was faced with a demanding set of complex
challenges: a congested site ringed by five major hospital buildings;
demolition; multi-level connections of the new structure and the
five existing buildings; removal and replacement of the entrance
road adjacent of Presbyterian Hospital while maintaining constant
ambulance and pedestrian access; and maintaining a stringent schedule
without hampering normal hospital operations in Pittsburgh's largest
medical complex.
Construction
work on the new building was forced into a compressed schedule when
site work contractors, not under Mosites contract, discovered large,
unanticipated volumes of rock that had to be excavated, delaying
site preparation.
Despite
this delay, Mosites employed intensive manpower and skillful organization;
so the concrete foundation, floor slabs and underground garage for
the facility were completed expertly and on time.
